Candidate Statement from Mher Sahakyan
I am grateful that I have been nominated and accepted as a candidate for the position of Governing Council Member-at-Large with the International Studies Association (ISA).
I was born in the Soviet Union, which collapsed, and my childhood passed in Armenia, which, after the earthquake, appeared in regional isolation, economic crisis, and war. At that time, I began to show interest in international relations and geopolitics, as I believed that the situation on the Eurasian continent and worldwide could be improved by resolving international issues. I specialised in Chinese and Eurasian international relations and received my doctoral degree from Nanjing University. I have also been an AsiaGlobal Fellow at the University of Hong Kong, Fulbright Visiting Scholar at the Johns Hopkins University’s School of Advanced International Studies, and a LEWI Fellow at the Hong Kong Baptist University, creating contacts with emerging leaders. I have founded the China-Eurasia Council for Political and Strategic Research and the Eurasian Research on Modern China and Eurasia conference. During these initiatives, my primary goal has been to bring together scholars from the West, East, North, and South to discuss and provide recommendations for solving the problems.
I initiated and edited Routledge Handbook of Chinese and Eurasian International Relations (2024), China and Eurasian Powers in a Multipolar World Order 2.0 Security, Diplomacy, Economy and Cyberspace (2023), co edited Routledge Handbook of China’s Belt and Road Initiaitve in Eurasia (2025), and China and Eurasia Rethinking Cooperation and Contradictions in the Era of Changing World Order (2021). For publishing these works, I united accomplished scholars from over 35 countries. Together with colleagues, we demonstrated that even in a challenging Multipolar World Order 2.0, it is possible to navigate together and find ways for further coexistence. Recently, I initiated the establishment of the Routledge Research in Eurasian Geopolitics book series, which aims to provide a reliable and well-balanced platform for all colleagues from different geographies. Therefore, I will bring to ISA my vast network, experience as a leader, scholar, and editor. I started my journey with the ISA during my Fulbright Visiting Scholarship at the School of Advanced International Studies, chairing and speaking during panels of the ISA convention and conference and creating contacts with colleagues. Therefore, many colleagues are aware of my research, style, and philosophy and that I will do my best to play the role of a connector between scholars from different parts of the world.
